Professional team ready for any crisis

A psychological crisis intervention team made up of 20 professionals have been active in Jiading in helping local people deal with the aftermath of disasters and accidents such as earthquakes or chemical leaks.
Jiading is one of few districts in Shanghai to have such a team.
The team received its first call for help last December.
“The woman was so terrified that she dared not close her eyes,” Dr Li Li recalled. The 89-year-old was awoken at midnight on November 29 last year by a huge gas blast in a house on Wenshu Road. Afterward, she was unable to fall asleep for quite a few days. Even the sight of a gas cooker was enough to frighten her. Receiving a call from her relatives, members of the team visited and talked to the elderly woman, calming her down and prescribing anti-anxiety drugs.
It was only then that she could go to sleep and she gradually recovered from the fright.
“The key is to establish a relationship with patients and find out exactly what the real problem is,” said Shen Hongyan, a member of the team.
In February this year a case of heavy metal poisoning at an enterprise caused some employees to suffer respiratory problems. Apart from the metal poisoning, some patients also suffered from acute anxiety which made their breathing problems even more serious. They felt as if they were suffocating. “The precondition for effective psychological intervention is the trust. A willingness to seek psychological intervention by the patient is the key for treatment,” Shen said. She answered their questions, taught them a new way of breathing to avoid feelings of suffocation and in a few days were on the road to recovery.
“Psychological intervention is an important part of rescuing, as medical rescue is not limited to people’s bodies in case of accidents,” team leader Tan Jiadi said.
