Protecting rights a boost for Jiading industries

JIADING has launched a series of measures including support policies and training services to help local enterprises own intellectual property rights and establish a good environment for innovation.

By the end of last year, Jiading's enterprises, institutes and individuals had owned 12,473 effective patents. In 2010 and 2011, the district had been granted more than 2,600 patents respectively in both years, while in 2012 the number increased to 3,429.

The rapid increase of granted patents reflects the rapid expansion of Jiading's high-tech industry, industry insiders said.

Previously, Jiading was only focused on the rising number of patents, but now local enterprises are more concerned about how to make patents serve industrial development.

"Now we haven't found any of Jiading's patents was useless," said an official with the Jiading Science Commission. "All the patents are valuable and can create real profits for enterprises."

In fact, the value of patents can be clearly showed through the enterprise revenue.

Print patents

Shanghai Wood-Based Panel Machinery Company in Jiading's Anting Town owns several multi-layer press machines. It now owns 28 patents in the multi-layer press machine. More than 10 years ago, the patents of artificial panel production equipment were monopolized by foreign companies, and one machine would cost over US$1 million, according to a company official.

In 1990, it took out its first patent for utility models. Now the company has applied for 156 patents and has been granted 129.

More Jiading enterprises are becoming involved in applying for patents to ensure market share and create added value in their products.

Shanghai Yaowei Group used to suffer a lot from other companies' infringement. As a high-tech enterprise, Yaowei soon realized that the best way to improve its competitive power was to apply for and protect patents.

Yaowei now has a special administrator in charge of intellectual property rights related issues including patents, trademarks, commercial secrets, software copyright and domain names.

The company has also signed confidentiality agreements and non-competitive agreements with key employees to protect its patents and technologies.
