Recipes improving farmland fertility

Soil fertility in Jiading is getting better due to improved fertilizers, according to district agriculture officials.
Officials from Jiading Agricultural Committee have collected soil and plant samples from nine farmland monitoring stations for tests.
Though the examinations are ongoing, the officials are optimistic about the final results.
With the development of industrialization and urbanization, the quality of farmland is continuously decreasing, with the long-term use of chemical fertilizers damaging productivity and affecting production.
To solve the problem, Jiading agricultural authority has taken measures including land quality checks, applying fertilizer according to the land quality and eliminating enterprises with heavy pollution.
Close monitoring
The district has set up 50 farmland productivity monitoring stations, which can detect changes in soil nutrients.
The district’s agricultural authorities have been promoting scientific fertilization since 2008, which analyzes the content of soil first and uses scientific fertilizer recipes.
In 2010, a farmer in Juyuan found production from his farm could not increase any more.
After a complete analysis of the soil it was found that the nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium in it were out of balance.
Staff with the district agricultural committee gave a fertilizer recipe to the farmer. After just a year, both production volume and quality were greatly improved.
Besides unscientific fertilization, acid rain is an important cause of the decrease in farmland productivity.
Jiading has started to knock out chemical enterprises which seriously pollute the environment.
About 70 enterprises have been shut down and more than 100 traditional boilers replaced with clean energy in the past three years, according to agriculture officials.
