Record attendance at sports event

More than 67,400 residents in Jiading District took part in the district’s first Citizen Sports Meeting late last month which featured 29 sports and 438 competitions. A total of 62 teams representing all walks of life in the district took part.
It was the biggest sports meeting in the district in recent years with the largest number of athletes and teams.
In previous sports meetings in the district, the largest number of athletes was around 50,000, with most of them semi-professional.
“We encourage more residents to participate in the sports meeting and play sports that suit them the most. Students can learn exercises between classes, white collars can do them between work breaks; the young and the middle aged can join sports games while the elderly can learn group dancing. Thus everyone could do exercises and develop an interest in sports in the end,” Xuan Minghua, deputy director of Jiading Sports Bureau, said.
Jiading plans to hold the sports meeting once every five years.
This time, nearly 70,000 people signed up for the sports meeting, which was far more than the sports administrators had expected.
“This year we canceled the total score list of delegation and added the participation rate instead, aiming to develop a new concept of sports among citizens. A sports meeting does not solely mean competition, winning or losing games,” Xuan said.
“The sports shows cover martial arts, running, rope skipping and many other sports games. We review them emphasizing participation ratio and show effect,” Xuan said.
This year’s sports meeting included many new events, like group dancing, aerobics and a cross-country racing competition.
The district launched a WeChat account in conjunction with the sports meeting, uploading more than 500 articles covering sports meeting news, information about the athletes and sports guidance.
