Residency permits for expats soar 114%
THE registration of temporary residency by expat visitors in Jiading District in 2008 reached 66,380, an increase of 114 percent compared with 2007.
Statistics from the district's police office showed that the number of expats who worked in the district reached 7,029 last year. Of these 80 percent were from America, Britain, Germany, Japan, Malaysia, Singapore and South Korea.
Hiroki Iwamoto, the president of Kobelco Compressors Corp, said Jiading is developing at an amazing speed, especially in public transport.
Joshua Henderson is in charge of the China office of the US New Energy Technology Supervision Co Ltd. Having lived in Beijing for more than 10 years, Henderson is very familiar with China and has a Chinese name - Zhang Aizhong (Aizhong means loving China).
With the expansion of his business, Henderson decided to establish an office in Shanghai.
Last month, he came to Anting Town on the recommendation of a friend. Henderson found that the transportation in Anting is very convenient. The town is also the base of the automobile industry. There are many potential customers for Henderson's business. Finally, he rented a 200-square-meter office near the Metro station.
Recently he contacted Tongji University's Jiading campus, just a few kilometers away from his new office as he is considering to employ some college graduates majoring in automobile manufacturing and proficient in English for his new office. "The staff in Anting Town are very efficient. This is ideal," he says.
With a growing number of expats living in the district, there is also an increase in foreign affairs.
In 2008, the local government received 320 delegations from sister cities and overseas companies, a total of 1,355 visitors.
John Tregidga, mayor of the Hauraki District Council of New Zealand, said during a visit to Jiading that the Hauraki District attached a great importance to building a friendly relationship with Jiading and hoped to conduct a deeper exchange in culture, sports and business. Each year, an exchange program for high school students and teachers from both districts will be carried out. As well, during the district's tourism festival, Hauraki District will send local artists to perform in Jiading.
