Residents display their green feats

JIADING residents tend to enjoy a low-carbon lifestyle, which is more energy-efficient, greener and healthier.

The Qingyu community in Zhenxin residential area is recommending its residents grow organic vegetables such as lettuce and water spinach on their balconies.

Wang Youming, who lives in Jiabang community, received the title of "National Innovative Low-carbon Star" (1,000 totally in China) named by the All-China Women's Federation earlier this year. The "green star" has compiled six "textbooks" providing low-carbon tips and environmental protection knowledge. All of the "textbooks" are hand-written on the back of used paper. Wang has given 12 lectures to his neighbors since last year to popularize ecological knowledge. Nearly 1,000 residents have attended his lectures.

He Yuelong, another "green star" from Huazhuang Village, Jiangqiao Town, has a "family low-carbon plan" - on which 20-plus low-carbon "trivialities" are listed. He and his wife Zhang Xiaoying note their monthly home expenses. According to the notes, their annual electricity cost has dropped to 1,000 yuan (US$153) from 3,000 yuan after Zhang carefully controlled the power of home appliances including the air-conditioner, television and fridge.

Taoyuan neighborhood resident Wu Chengyu is glad to have the lamps in his apartment renewed. The new lamps are energy efficient and can release negative ions to purify the air, said Wu. The district government has offered 16,000 lamps for free to local residents. The new 20W lamp is as bright as a traditional 100W incandescent lamp, and can save the power of about 85 percent. Jiading Town community has implemented "water-saving" toilet cistern fittings, taps and shower heads in some apartments, which can save more than 50 million tons of water every year. The community established 17 neighborhood science stations for residents to regularly communicate low-carbon lifestyle tips.

A 3-meter-high "low-carbon experience house" now stands in the Jinsha Green Park in Zhenxin community. The 200-square-meter house has a collection of eco-friendly construction materials, inner decorations and household appliances, including cupboards made from straw and a home sewage-recycling system.
