Science works its magic in farmfields, grape gardens

FARMERS in Jiading District have witnessed increases in both crop yields and incomes due to the introduction of modern science and technology.

The standardized planting area of quality grapes in Malu Town has reached 230 hectares and the planting area of plastic greenhouses has reached 80 hectares.

Under the support of the Malu Grape Research Institute, Malu Town has now developed 102 species with a total planting area of 400 hectares. The town has also formed an industry chain that integrates production, sales and tourism.

Last year, with the promotion of plastic greenhouses, the average output per mu (0.067 hectare) of each farmer in Malu increased 20 percent. The town's average net income per mu increased to 7,000 yuan (US$1,024).

To promote sound development of efficient, eco-agriculture in the district, experts in science and technology were invited to guide 25 farmer cooperatives. They helped reduce costs and improve quality.

Yuhua Village is an excellent example. The village's output of rice per mu reached 629.27 kilograms, increasing 13 percent over the same period in 2007.

In fact, for the past several years, the district has set up several studios and research institutions covering grapes, cantaloupes, winter sweet and aquatic animals as pets.

A batch of top agricultural experts such as Wu Mingzhu, an academician in the melon industry and Chen Junyu, an academician in the industry of winter sweet, were sent to the forefront of the agricultural production line to cultivate talent.
