Scope of residence permit extended
WITH the growing number of foreigners coming to visit Chinese relatives or having their kids taken care of in China in recent years, these people, according to current stipulation, can normally be granted a temporary visa of up to one year and can apply for visa extension before it expires.
The Ministry of Public Security now plans to extend the scope of the residence permit. Since June 1, foreigners can be granted five categories of residence permit, namely "visiting relatives," "seeking refuge," "purchasing house," "supporting parents" and "fostering child." If needing to stay in China for more than six months, they can apply for a residence permit with no limit to the number of entries.
Detailed information:
1. Foreign spouses, parents and children under 18 of Chinese citizens or foreigners who have permanent residence status in China.
For Chinese nationals with registered permanent residence, or foreigners with permanent residence, the local immigration authorities of the public security bureau can issue visa extensions for their relatives of not more than 6 months, or visiting visa for once, twice or multiple entries, with relevant supporting documents provided by the applicant.
Those who need to stay continuously in China for more than 6 months can be issued a residence permit of "visiting relative category" for not more than one year. The permit can be renewed after the expiry if the applicant still conforms to the stipulated conditions and can provide relevant materials. For those over 60 or under 18, a residence permit can be granted for not more than 2 years. The permit can be renewed after the expiry if the applicant still conforms to the required conditions and can provide relevant materials.
2. Foreigners over 60 and their spouses who don't have immediate families abroad and come to China to live with their immediate families. The immediate family members in China can be Chinese citizens or foreigners who have permanent residence status in China.
