Service companies cashing in on the heat
The continuous heat wave that has forced many Jiading residents to stay at home whenever possible, has allowed the business of running errands for others to flourish.
”We provide service for those people and make money in a way,” said Chen Xiaoming, who runs such a company on Jinsha Road. Since July the company’s business has more than doubled.
Chen’s company provides all kinds of such services, including buying medicines, food and daily necessities, paying bills, and queuing up at restaurants, clinics or cinemas.
Shanghai Kuaibang Co charges clients 8 yuan (US$1.3) for errands within 10 minutes, and 10 yuan per hour when exceeding 10 minutes. They also have different prices for other services, such as a 10-percent commission for buying brand clothes, 100 to 300 yuan for buying medicine and 50 to 150 yuan for queuing.
”We charge clients on the basis of time, and running errands at night are more expensive than daytime,” the company owner said.
Some residents worry about privacy as some of the companies don’t have licenses.
“Credibility is a key factor for the development of the companies,” said lawyer Wang Zhan from Shanghai Lianye Law Office.
