Sister cities cement China-Japan relations

SINCE the normalization of Sino-Japanese diplomatic relations, the association between these two countries has made unprecedented progress through the hard work of the governments of China and Japan.

As early as 1978, when the countries' governments signed the Treaty of Peace and Friendship between Japan and the People's Republic of China, the people from the two countries started to make friends with each other.

In April 1982, reconciled by the governments of Shanghai and Osaka, members of the Japan-China Friendship Association from the city of Yao, which is under the jurisdiction of Osaka, visited Jiading District.

Several years later, due to the increase of non-official exchange, the governments of China and Japan decided to start official visits in 1986.

On September 13, 1986, Jiading director Li Baolin paid a visit to Yao and signed a sister city agreement, marking the official start of the friendship between the two cities.

During 25 years of friendship, many efforts have been made between Jiading District and Yao, such as study, medical care and management exchanges. Both cities have also cooperated in areas such as city planning, administration supervising, community management, economic cooperation and medical care by continuous communication with each other.

The two cities have also shown great support to each other when either of the country is hit by natural disasters.

When the Wenchuan earthquake hit Sichuan Province in May 2008, Yao was quick to express sympathy followed by donations of 100 woolen blankets and 500 sets of oral hygiene equipment worth 1.2 million Japanese yen (US$14,386), while the women's organization of Yao donated 500,000 Japanese yen in cash.

Similarly, when the 9.0-magnitude earthquake and subsequent tsunami struck eastern Japan last month, Jiading District residents sent sympathy messages and donated 500 woolen blankets to the affected region in Japan.

In September, Jiading District will celebrate the 25th anniversary of the friendship between Jiading District and Yao.
