Six firms win top awards for new science achievements

SIX enterprises from Jiading District won the 2010 Shanghai Science and Technology Awards recently.

Shanghai Qiyuan Air Separation Technology and Development Co Ltd is the relatively "younger brother" among the six local award-winning enterprises. The company covers an area of only 1.33 hectares and its annual output is less than 100 million yuan (US$15 million), while its annual tax reaches more than 10 million yuan, since high technology brought high added value.

Qiyuan Air Separation has mastered the core technology in producing air separation equipment to separate high-purity nitrogen from the air.

The flagship products of the company use updated production process which keeps energy consumption to a minimum and environmental pollution is zero. The equipment is easy to operate and maintain. Besides domestic orders, the company has received 25 international orders.

This private enterprise pays attention not only to updating its products, but also its business models. Early this year, it set up two nitrogen-filling stations in two industrial parks in Shandong Province.

ZF Shanghai Steering Systems (ZFSS), the subdivision of world-leading automotive supplier ZF, has developed a new method to produce spools - the core part in the hydraulic power-steering system - which could bring a total output of more than 1 billion yuan.

The new design and technology simplify the production process, increase the production capacity by up to three times as much as the original one, and significantly lower noise.

ZFSS has also been honored in the city as both an "Advanced Technology Enterprise" and "High-tech Enterprise."

Shanghai Yaowei (Group) Co Ltd provides security control systems for major hazards in petrochemical enterprises. Yaowei has developed an intelligent system including monitoring, early warning, control and emergency rescue for petrochemical enterprises. The project received four patents.

It is reported that the 2010 Shanghai Science and Technology Awards were given to 298 projects, of which there were 49 first prizes.
