Smart bins will remind residents to sort trash

Two “talking” waste bins appearing in Jiading are part of the district’s first batch of intelligent facilities to promote garbage sorting.

One is on Nanxiang Old Street and the other is at Nanxiang Town Cultural and Sports Service Center.

When users activate a sensor to open the lid, a voice message in both Chinese and English reminds them: “Please sort your garbage before disposing it.”

The smart bin contains four buckets to separate waste into four categories — hazardous, recyclable, wet and dry.

After detecting that waste has been tossed in, the bin will automatically spray deodorant to remove any smells. On the top of the bin there is a solar panel which provides the power to support the intelligent sensors, odor removal facility and voice instructions.

According to a member of staff, the bin has been set up to educate citizens on how to properly sort their waste appropriately with the help of voice instructions. “The smart bin is more than an ordinary waste container. It serves as a tool for popularizing garbage sorting,” said the staff member.

The functions of such smart bins may seem to be simple for now. However, intelligent technology has become an essential method of promoting garbage sorting in Jiading.

Jiading has announced its strategic layout of an intelligent garbage sorting system. According to a three-year action plan for domestic waste sorting system construction, the district will gradually improve the technical level of domestic waste disposal facilities and promote applications of new technologies, equipment and materials in the area of waste treatment.

In addition, application of information technologies such as Internet plus, Big Data and Artificial Intelligence will also be encouraged to provide technical support for garbage sorting.

Next, Jiading will try building an intelligent supervision platform in combination with “Smart City,” “Smart Community” and “Smart Public Security” construction. The platform will be piloted in local residential communities in good living conditions so as to enhance waste sorting management and improve the precision and refinement of waste treatment.

These communities will also upgrade the Green Account system, install HD face recognition cameras and set up warning devices which can detect trash thrown from high windows.
