Solving one problem and making it zero

As senior repair engineer at an automobile corporation, Zhu Shisheng has a unique working ethic: one to zero. Zhu says the engineer must solve every technical problem and prevent it from happening again.

This year, he was awarded the Jiading Craftsmanship honor for his 鈥渙ne to zero鈥 working ethic which means that engineers should fix one problem and prevent it from happening again. In Zhu鈥檚 colleagues鈥 eyes, Zhu is such a conscientious engineer that he not only created the concept, but also practiced it at work.

Thirty-four years ago, after graduation from university, Zhu was assigned to a semiconductor research institution in Shanghai, though he had studied telecommunication in the school.

鈥淚t was a new beginning. I knew nothing about the semiconductor area, but I had to learn what I was working.鈥 Zhu recalled. 鈥淪o I followed my mentor鈥檚 instruction in the daytime, seeking every opportunity to practice on the machine. Then I went to the bookstore to study more relevant knowledge and mechanism at night after the work on my own. It was tough, but I persevered.鈥

In 2010, when Zhu was a newcomer at the company, one production line producing automobile parts suddenly stopped operating. The expat experts can鈥檛 figure out which part went wrong. When the whole team were flummoxed, Zhu thought that the defect should be caused by the control system instead of the hardware.

Then, with a thorough accurate diagnosis, Zhu located the target at the pulse signals sensor and solved the problem. So far, this production line has operated for eight years without any trouble.

Zhu also posed five principles for maintenance work: safety, easy practice, low cost, maintenance-free and working environment improvement. 鈥淭o be an outstanding engineer, one has to combine the strict and creative minds. That is how the golden idea comes from,鈥 said Zhu.

In recent years, apart from devoting himself to improving productivity and workers鈥 efficiency, Zhu spends six to eight months teaching at Jiading Engineer School, giving lectures for junior technical workers for free.

He has also written a book about his working experiences which is also a good study reference for new workers. Throughout these years, two senior technicians and a dozen engineers have been cultivated by Zhu.
