Students learn about living in Sichuan
FIVE students from Jiading Experimental School visited a school in southwest China’s Sichuan Province in late June to learn about the life in the mountainous region, accompanied by their fathers.
Grade-five student Wang Junzhi woke early and packed two large cases before joining the group on a four-day trip to Miaopu Hope Primary School in Shuanghekou Village.
“It was hard as we spent one day and one night to cover the distance of more than 2,000 kilometers in a minivan and a pickup. The road in Leibo County was so muddy and bumpy that I couldn’t stand it, not to mention the kids,” said organizer Zhou Xiang.
“Two kids cried in the car. Some roads are just beside cliffs, and on the road you can easily find stones fallen from top of the mountains.”
In her diary, Wang wrote: “I was shocked to see the school. And we visited a local girl’s home. Her house is made of bamboo and water leaks into the room when it rains. She has quit school as there are five other kids in the family. The family is so poor that they only have two lamps in the house.”
Hard life
Zhou said: “There is no computer, no Wi-Fi in the school. There is only one water tap, so dozens of people queue up in front of it in the morning to wash their faces and clean their teeth. The rooms are so damp that one can even squeeze out water from the quilts. At night I couldn’t fall asleep and went out for a walk, however, it was pitch black so I had to return to the room.”
Teachers at the school set aside seven dormitories for their guests from Jiading.
The delegation brought 500 umbrellas for students and local residents. Every child was given White Rabbit candies, a Shanghai treat.
Wang’s father said it was a unique experience and a valuable one for his daughter, who started to realize that her happy and comfortable life in Shanghai was hard-earned.
He said the trip had given the children a good idea of how hard life could be and how they should treasure the life they have.
