Summer activities to keepkids in good shape
THIS summer holiday, children in Jiading District are being exposed to more sports, games and training to improve health conditions.
To ease students' heavy homework burdens and improve health, a campaign has been promoted citywide with an orientation on both sports and education.
One afternoon earlier this month, student teams from Jiading No. 1 High School and Anting High School had a football match at Xuhang High School.
"It's really enjoyable to compete with peers from other schools in the summer holiday," said Xu Fengxuan, one of the young players. "When I joined the football team at our school, I used to play one match each week, which was far from enough for me."
The summer football matches have attracted 21 teams from different schools in Jiading, according to Xu.
Basketball matches and a swimming contest are also being held in the district with the same aim to enhance students' physical conditions.
Swimming classes at local primary schools are very popular.
"We've been providing swimming classes for many years," says Li Zhong, who is in charge of swimming training for local primary school students in the district. "This summer, almost 900 students are practicing here. The number of participants is still growing."
Li Zhuo, a third-grade student, has picked up freestyle swimming after two weeks of training. Li is going to take an advanced swimming class to enhance his skills.
In addition to swimming lessons, the district has also provided art, football, tae kwon do, fitness exercises and yoga classes to students.
To curb the trend of shortsightedness among young students, quizzes, eye assessments and eye protection exercises have been carried out.
To ensure oral cavity health, lectures on protecting teeth are also being offered to parents and students.
