Teaching impresses cooperative leaders
JIADING Agriculture Technology Center has set up a new vocational farmer training course this year to provide a platform for farmers to learn and exchange techniques. The course covers a wide range of topics, including: planting Hami melon in strawberry fields, shielding grapes from bad weather and breeding high-yielding quality rice.
In May, Jiading joined with Shanghai’s Baoshan District to set up a training course especially for leaders of rural cooperatives. The training course is expected to conclude after the harvesting of rice this autumn. Forty cooperative leaders took part in the 150-hour course. The cooperative leaders were impressed by the free teaching style, and happy to be encouraged to discuss rather than just listening to a teacher as in some other previous courses.
In early September, the trainees visited a rice base in Baoshan. They saw farmers raise crabs in the paddy field, which impressed them. The paddy fields are covered with insect proof nets. The rice looked strong and neat, with crabs crawling all over the field. Though they had heard of growing rice and raising crabs together, it was the first time they had seen it.
Chen Yun, a grape planter, completed the course from the field school at Waigang Town in August. “I followed the planting procedure and techniques learnt in the class strictly,” Chen Yun said. “The techniques really worked.” Chen’s grape won first prize at a grape comparison in class.
In the class at Dengta Village, the farmers learned about planting Hami melon in strawberry fields, which could help them to fully use land resources.
