Teams take up spots at university incubator

A FIRST batch of 42 teams have taken spots in the newly established incubation valley on the Jiading Campus of Tongji University. The projects mainly focus on four sectors — smart manufacturing, culture and design, Internet Plus and creative services.

The campus incubator provides students with a trial zone to start up their own businesses, according to communications director Zhu Penghui. Unlike other social incubators, it is not after profit but aims to help students foster their creative ideas.

Liu Chenglong’s team developed a vibration measurer for road surfaces.

Different from laser measurers from abroad, his invention uses the amplitude of vibration to calculate the flatness of a road. The project began when Liu was a sophomore. By now, the vibration measurer has been tested in real conditions over a distance of 2,000 kilometers. Its cost is only half that of a laser vibration measurer with an inaccuracy below 10 percent.

The invention received second prize in a recent national college students’ academic and technology competition. Liu’s team have signed agreements with Shanghai Road Administration Bureau and Huzhou Road Administration Bureau.

Every student of Tongji University has to complete a creativity course worth two credits. There are 126 related courses available.

For teams in the valley, as long as their projects complete the incubation, students will receive two credits for their academic studies as well.
