Technology upgrades cut power costs, add profits

AN increasing number of Jiading District companies are proving that technology-driven upgrades not only boost production, but also cut back on utility bills - both crucial components for bumping up profitability.

Shanghai ZhuoKai Electronic Technology Co requires constant temperature and humidity in its dustless workshop and the humidifiers should be used for half a year, which consumes a great deal of electricity. Starting from this year, with a technology upgrade, ZhuoKai is using high-pressure spray humidifiers instead of electric ones.

This change alone will slash annual power consumption at the workshop by a hefty 98 percent - or more than 1,000 kilowatt hours per day. The company has initiated 10 technology upgrade projects so far this year, such as using air compressor heat recovery technology to replace a diesel furnace.

Together, these projects have saved the company about 400,000 yuan (US$62,983) per month on average during the first half of the year. As a result, ZhuoKai's energy consumption per unit of output value has fallen nearly 20 percent in the first half from a year earlier.

Technology upgrades could also mean bigger returns. Shanghai Kostal-Huayang Automotive Electric Co, which has spent about 1.5 million yuan on six technology upgrade projects since last year, expects all the spending to be recovered within two years.

For example, the company has upgraded its hydraulic injection molding machines to hybrid electric-hydraulic ones, which can save 400,000 kWh annually. Up till now, the six projects have totally saved Kostal-Huayang 1.51 million kWh in electricity consumption, or 453 tons of standard coal.

"For one project, we only need two months to get our investment back," said Ma Dingke, an engineer at the Sino-German company.
