Undergrads involved in social work

A FOURTH group of 10 undergraduate students have become social workers in Jiading New Town to cope with disputes between residents in the communities.

Social workers are in great need in the new town where eight neighborhood communities are being set up.

In one case, a resident was decorating his home and the noise bothered his neighbor. In another case, a resident wanted to join a book donation for kids of migrant workers, but he missed it because he works during the day. Though the two cases seem trivial, they mean a great deal to the people involved. Social workers intervened in both cases and solved their problems.

Jiading New Town started to recruit community workers under the age of 35 in 2010. So far they have hired 36 undergraduate students. It organized them to learn from the senior social workers how to deal with different cases, and sent them to communities in downtown areas for training.

In return, the young people have created something new in their social work and make it more attractive. For example, they make PPT documents, bulletins and videos to record good deeds to encourage more residents to make contributions to their community.
