Welcome mats laid out for foreign visitors to district

AS an Expo demonstration area for experiencing Shanghai urban and rural life, Jiading District will entertain many foreign guests.

And preparation work is in full swing in the district.

At the only example to be displayed of a self-governed community named "Taoyuan," Shanghai Residents' Committee in Jiading will offer foreign guests Chinese massage, traditional Xiju Opera and table tennis.

"We have also provided two large-size traditional Chinese costumes and an English script," said Huang Bei, who is in charge of the opera salon.

"They can experience traditional Chinese opera in person."

The site is also decorated in traditional Chinese style complete with old tables and chairs. More than 40 photos shot by local residents display customs and cultures across China.

Shi Xiuying, 64, picked up English from her daughter whenever she could after leaning that her family would probably receive foreign guests.

"If they come to my home, I will treat them with dumplings,'' Shi said.

She is creative in cooking dumplings using celery or radish.

Shi has also decorated her home with the Expo logo, mascot Haibao and homemade ornaments, including embroidery with the Expo logo.

"I make these ornaments with my friends," Shi said. "If foreign visitors are interested, I can teach them how to make it."

Jiading will receive groups from Portugal, New Zealand and Thailand during the Expo.

They can be a Jiading resident for one day, watch a performance, join in a sports game and visit scenic spots.

They can also experience grape-picking, grass-weaving and kite-flying.
