Wireless in-car charging becomes reality
DELPHI Packard Electric Systems Ltd, which has its headquarters in Jiading’s Shanghai Auto City, has successfully developed an in-car wireless charger for mobile phones. The company has partnered with two domestic car makers, one of which is now in mass production.
Charging mobiles in the car is not new. However, the technology to support wireless charging has not been easy to realize. The biggest challenge is reliability, according to Zhang Jian, manager of the company’s electronics engineering department.
Zhang says temperature matters a lot to product reliability. Normally, electronic products work properly at an environment of between 30 to 40 degrees Celsius. But the requirement will be 65 to 85 degrees for gadgets to be used safely in car. Delphi Packard requires its product to work continuously for 500 hours in such an environment without breakdowns or faults during product reliability tests.
During the R&D process, Zhang’s team was puzzled by the issue of electromagnetic interference. Wireless charging technology uses air as a medium, which means noise and radiation are inevitable during charging. So other electronic gadgets might be affected as well. “Radiation is no good to either human beings or electric appliances,” Zhang said. Radios and navigators in cars will be interfered with or even break down if the issue is not resolved.
The in-car wireless mobile charger developed by Delphi Parkcard passed the EMC Test and is graded 4, the highest level domestically.
However, the technology still has the potential to improve, such as charging efficiency, saving people from borrowing chargers from others while improving driving safety.
Zhang said Delphi Packard is to launch more products, such as remote charging and one-to-multiple charging mode, in the future to meet market demand and make in-car wireless charging technology more accessible.
