Working hard for the people

JIADING Industrial Zone is trying to improve the community service. For the past two years, the communities in the zone put forward more than 60 service programs to meet the requirement of residents.

"Here you can get to know a lot of people and learn a lot," said Wu Dongying, who is mentally challenged, while attending an activity organized by the Nursery for the Disabled in Tianhua Community. Wu and her friends can learn about such things as Chinese operas, physical exercise, folk dance and games. A room has also been set up for disabled people to rehabilitate under the guidance of professionals.

Qian Xiaohuan, head of the nursery, said there are more than 100 disabled people in the community of 1,700 households. A lack of leisure activities and professional training in rehabilitation skills are the two main problems puzzling families with a disabled member. The nursery is set up specially to meet the need for these families.

Similarly, Shengxin Community has set up Lily's Home Society for women with serious illness, and Fuyun Community has established Rainbow Home for migrant wives.

All kinds of resources

"Thank you so much, otherwise we have to rush to the hospital again and again," Xiang Huifeng of Yumin Community said to nurse Yu Lingyan from Jiading District Central Hospital, who was changing fresh dressing for a wound on the right foot of the old lady at her home.

Yu is a member of community medical team, which is made up of 35 doctors and nurses. Residents can call members of the team for help. Team members also provide medical service in the community periodically.

Similar to Yumin Community, all communities in the industrial zone share a variety of resources to provide services for the local residents. Xinbao Community, for example, has set up a People Classroom, asking retired teachers and staff from the district Food and Drug Administration and consumer protection commission to give different lectures for the residents in the community.

To offer better service, the community administrators of Jiading Industrial Zone would make a research before pushing forward a project, such as holding meetings and sending out questionnaires to residents to make sure the projects will be well received. For instance, when the migrant women suggested the time of activities organized by the Rainbow Home rearranged to the weekend, it was accepted right away, and the attendance improved significantly.

Recently, the industrial zone administrators have evaluated each of the 60 service programs and held meetings with participants to see how to improve the service.

To encourage the participants, the industrial zone has set up a special fund on project management.
