Working out new ways to go green

It is not feasible to build a large number of green lands in the city these days because of rapid urbanization. However, Jiading District has worked out a new plan to increase its urban green coverage.

Over the past few years, new tree plantations have grown up in the district. Even the garbage dump has been turned into green land.

By the end of last year, green land in the district covered an area of 2,257 hectares and the forests reached 8,000 hectares, double the figure in 1999.

The district is becoming a green town.

This year Jiading will build 22 more hectares of green land. By July nearly 18 hectares has been constructed.

To increase forest coverage, particularly in the northern areas, the district government has launched the subsidy program. Villagers can receive a subsidy of 30 yuan (US$4.76) for planting a tree. More than 100,000 trees were planted from 2011 to 2012 and this year they will plant 30,000 more.

“It is such a good thing for us,” Gu, a resident of Maoqiao Village, said. “The green lands can improve the environment we live in. We can also get some subsidies for that.”

The garbage dump at Fengbang in Jiangqiao Town was around 50,000 square meters. The government invested 1.5 million yuan to turn it into green land.

Around 80 percent of the dump is now covered in trees and some areas formerly planned for commercial use have become mini parks for residents to do physical exercise.

Green rooftops plan is also underway.

The government is to introduce fitness equipment and entertainment venues to the green land.
