Center opens to provide respite care for elderly
A new comprehensive services center for senior citizens, the first of its kind in Shanghai, has opened in the Shimen No.2 Road Community.
The first floor features a recreational area where the elderly can gather with friends, chat, do handicrafts and play games.
The day-care area will be staffed by social workers during the day. Lunch will also be provided.
On the second-floor are 10 beds for seniors with physical or mental disabilities, as well as those who were recently discharged from hospital but still require medical attention.
Those on this floor can receive 24-hour attention from medical and social workers, and can stay for up to a year.
“We offer respite care,” said You Liqun, who is in charge of the service. “Family members are encouraged to participate in activities.”
Over one-third of the population in this community is over 60 years old. Thus, the 10 beds are far from enough.
The center will teach families how to take care of seniors at home and how to create age-friendly fixtures that allow seniors convenient mobility, said Yu Ling, project manager of the Shanghai Fuyuan Endowment Service Center, which manages the new community center.
A Shanghai political advisory body held a meeting recently to discuss the aging population in the city. Authorities said that 50 facilities similar to the new Shimen No.2 Road center will be built in Shanghai this year.
About 4.4 million people, or 30 percent of Shanghai’s population, are 60 years or older. It is one of the highest urban concentrations of seniors in China, putting a squeeze on existing facilities to care for them. For every 12 seniors with dementia there is only one bed available.
