Crackdown on horn cacophony
A sonar system used by the military to locate snipers is now being deployed by Jing’an traffic police to crack down on illegal horn honking within the Outer Ring Road.
It was first introduced at the junction of Yan’an and Huashan roads in late August. Once the system detects the noise of a horn, roadside cameras record the vehicle.
Jing’an police have installed eight of the detection devices in congested areas. Every day, the equipment captures an average of 100 violators in an eight-hour period.
Police said artificial intelligence devices are the key to future traffic control. For example, motorists without license will be detected by a face-recognition photo system.
