Bus driver jailed in death of bicyclist

A minibus driver who allowed a passenger to open a bus door in an untimely fashion, killing a bicycle rider alongside, was sentenced to five months in prison by the Minhang District People's court recently.

The driver, Huang Songkun, was also ordered to pay 55,000 yuan (US$8,870) compensation.

The incident occurred last July, when Huang was driving a minibus on Jinggu Road. A passenger surnamed Su flung the right door open when the bus stopped. It collided with an electric bicycle, sending the bike, Su and the bicycle rider surnamed Jiang to the ground. Huang alerted police directly after the incident. Jiang died of traumatic brain injury.

Local traffic police remind car and bus drivers to be vigilant about bikes and small motorized vehicles on the roadways.
