Bus subsidies give cheaper fares and more routes

MINHANG District now boasts 54 bus routes, greatly helping transport local residents.

The district has launched several new routes recently, including Minhang bus No. 4, Jiang Chuan bus No. 5, and Pujing bus No. 11.

Factory worker surnamed Zhao lives in Xinzhuang and needs to take bus No. 15 to work every day in Wujing.

"Xinwu bus line was famous for its poor-quality service, and the driver always missed stops on the journey," he said.

"But now, since the new No. 15 bus line was launched, I can save six yuan every day. Usually I spent eight yuan on the return trip and now I only pay one yuan for a single trip."

The bus route was the first privately run community route that was taken over by the government.

In June, Minhang Transportation Company took over the Xinwu bus line, purchased six new buses and adjusted the fares to one yuan for the entire distance.

The district government grants a subsidy of 400,000 yuan every quarter to run this bus line and spends more than 60 million yuan a year on buses.
