Classes promise no 'landlubbers'
ALL Grade 3 primary school students in Minhang will get free swimming classes, starting in the second half of the year.
The one-year course will be divided into 28 classes, with the aim of ensuring that no student is a "landlubber" anymore, said the Minhang District Sports Bureau.
More than 11,600 students from 60 schools will take classes at the government's expense, officials said.
Parents welcomed the idea.
"It is necessary because swimming is life-saving skill," said Ellen Yang, mother of a 10-year-old boy in the district. "Every year we hear news of children drowning, so I think acquiring swimming skills may prevent some tragedies at least." In a pilot project leading up to the district-wide lessons, 1,920 students from five primary schools went to swimming classes.
"The children loved the lessons," said Sheng Zhenhua, director of the sports bureau.
In some developed countries, swimming is a compulsory course. That has prompted the Minhang government to include free swimming lessons as one of the 10 must-do activities in the Five-Year Plan to 2015.
The lessons will be held in 25 pools across the district and will be taught by professional coaches.
"We will give the coaches training in child psychology to improve their communication abilities with the children," said Zheng Jian, secretary general of Minhang District Swimming Association.
