Collegians design online courses in competition

A competition asking college students to design online courses concluded recently in Minhang.

The top entries were a project from East China Normal University entitled “generation-skipping education for the elderly” and one from Shanghai Jiao Tong University called “indoor aerobics for seniors.”

The ECNU’s design is aimed at promoting education and community feedback, according to Lei Qili, principal assistant of the project. He said the endeavor helps students serve community development.

The competition, now in its third year, attracted students from Fudan University, Shanghai Jiao Tong University, Shanghai University and 11 other colleges in the city.

The entries were put to an online vote embraced by 200,000 district residents. Altogether 36 projects were selected as exemplary.

Zeng Zhaoxuan, a student of psychology major at ECNU, led the team on the “generation-skipping” course.

He and his teammates found that 70 percent of grandparents were involved with raising grandchildren 3 years old and younger.

Their course design is aimed at nurturing the grandparents’ mindset.

“Psychological education is a gradual process, and we weren’t aiming at changing elderly concepts entirely in our nine lessons,” Zeng said. “We just hope that when special issues arise, the grandparents are better able to rise to the occasion.”

The “indoor aerobics” course design came from a team led by Huang Wenyan, a National Level-1 athlete. She said she thought there should be more options for seniors to exercise beyond line dancing and fused yoga into a mild version of aerobics.

Past participants in the annual competition have gone on to become community workers or start their own businesses after graduation.
