Cultural folk heritage travels to the grass roots, delighting the public

MINHANG District has seen an explosion of culture recently with the district government subsidizing efforts to expand folk art and culture into neighborhoods. This key project is part of a strategy to increase people's awareness of a rich cultural past and to promote communication among groups involved in the preservation of folk heritage.

In mid-September, a display of ancient classical Chinese books and paintings was put on exhibition at the Qinhan Lane Antique Pavilion in the Minhang District's Wanyuancheng neighborhood.

During the exhibition, antique experts were invited to conduct seminars for local residents on the ancient arts of painting and calligraphy as part of efforts to promote Chinese folk heritage in local communities.

In mid-August, the Qinhan Lane Antique Pavilion was designated as a folk collection pavilion by the district government.

Together with five other folk cultural sites selected at the same time, Minhang now boasts 12 exhibition halls specializing in folk art and culture. Another eight sites are expected to be added to this list later this year, bringing 100 exhibitions to the community.

"The folk exhibition halls allow us for the first time to invite cultural institutes to stage activities at the neighborhood level," said an official of the local culture administration.
