Cupid shoots perfect arrow at newlyweds
LI Jiusong, a well-known Shanghai comedian, arrived at the wedding registry center of Minhang early on February 14 with special Valentine's Day duties - presenting marriage certificates to six couples.
Newlyweds Zhou Qiang and Pan Hong were overwhelmed by the merriment of the occasion as they received their certificate from Li, nicknamed Old Uncle for his role in a Shanghai TV show about mediators solving family and neighborhood disputes.
"For Shanghainese, Li occupies a revered position, and we are glad that Old Uncle could present the certificate to us," Pan, the wife, said with a wide smile.
Zhou and Pan applied online for their certificate before rushing to the registration center. Once there, they asked for a short but solemn ceremony provided by the center.
The center often invites celebrities, such as TV or film stars and government officials, to present certificates to newlyweds. Couples never know who, if anyone, special will show up, though they can list in their online applications the stars or other people from whom they would love to receive their marriage certificates.
Hu Aimin, director of marriage registration at the center, said it's sometimes hard to get celebrities to show up on specific dates because of their busy schedules, but they do make every effort to create a special day for newlyweds.
The center also provides a one-stop shop for couples, providing make-up, wedding dresses, flower rental, photo and video services.
"The ceremony is simple, but romantic as well, and it is more frugal than hosting an expensive wedding banquet, which is not necessary sometimes," Li said. On the Valentine's Day, 181 couples tied the knot at the center, almost double the figure on an average day.
Hu said the center plans to broadcast the ceremonies online because about one-third of couples who register marriages at the center come from other parts of China and sometimes their families back home can't be present.
