Datong casts knowing eye over pavilion

STEP into the Shanghai Pavilion at the World Expo and experience the sensation of being in a time tunnel -- the underfoot platform can simulate the movement of various transport modes, from a bamboo raft to the Maglev superfast train.

Surprisingly under this huge platform of 30 tons there's a basement and it provides the challenge -- how to disperse the gravity of the platform and ensure the safety of tourists.

As one of the two design companies for the Shanghai Pavilion, Shanghai Datong No. 1 Steel Design and Research Institute in Hongqiao Town of Minhang District eventually solved the problem.

Based in Minhang for over 10 years, Datong completed various Minhang design projects, including Jinhui Community.

For the pavilion, Datong was mainly in charge of basic items such as steel structures, power and water supply, and fire protection.

To ensure all the aspects were finished perfectly, Datong sent 10 experienced engineers who often worked overtime on the building site of the Shanghai Pavilion.

The pavilion is not big but the level of science technology is proportionally high.

When Datong got this special project, all staff were both excited and worried about how to overcome various technology difficulties.

Throughout the design process, the plan was adjusted and improved through at least 10 versions.

In the Shanghai Pavilion there's a 4-D movie theater. To give visitors the best visual experience, Datong visited all the equipment producers to get detailed information of quality and ensure the excellence of the visual display.

After the pavilion was completed, Datong appointed an equipment engineer to monitor maintainance and repair work.

When the Expo ends, the Shanghai Pavilion will be moved to another location.

In consideration of this, it is connected with bolts and gemel instead of welding to make the future disassembly and reconstruction more convenient.
