Digital medical records streamline hospital visits

DIGITAL medical records have changed the lives of residents in Minhang District this year, with the district being a pioneer in China's move to improve its health care system.
The move to digital medical records for each patient has helped health officials treat patients based on previous consultations recorded on the card.
Parents of newborn babies, for example, can easily make appointments for inoculations by logging onto Minhang's health Website at www.mhwsw.com.
All they have to do is to input their baby's identity card number, enter a password which is the last six digits of their baby's ID number, and book an appointment for vaccinations at their community health clinic.
Each child is given a digital health card that records their weight, growth, inoculations, diet and medical problems.
The cards help medical staff accurately assess and treat each child according to their previous health conditions.
The district has also set up community health service centers where residents can check their blood pressure, and diabetic patients can monitor their blood sugar levels and diet.
Hongqiao resident surnamed Ling says he has developed good habits by dropping in every day at the automatic blood pressure testing station in his neighborhood.
Because digital medical records were established early in Minhang District, the health check centers now update medical records automatically when residents drop in for blood tests.
For diabetic patients, the updated digital health cards can remind community doctors to check the patient regularly.
From July this year, patients who need CT scans in Jiang Chuan Community can use their health cards to register at No. 5 Hospital with detailed information.
That means they don't have to waste time in reception and can proceed directly to the scanning room when they reach the hospital.
Also, citizens who own digital health cards can check for information updates on the Website.
Minhang District has updated technology and communications among different hospitals to enhance the smooth operation of the health card system.
