District raises millions for charity projects
A total of 54.4 million yuan (US$7.56 million) was raised for Minhang’s charity projects in 2024, with 53.04 million yuan spent — benefiting over 100,000 residents.
The figures were revealed in a report on the district’s philanthropic development released on September 5, China’s annual Charity Day.
District officials honored 2024-2025 Minhang “Charity Stars,” celebrating outstanding organizations and individuals for their contributions to local public welfare.
Two new charity projects were also unveiled: the “Brighten Up Snow Lotus” and “Brighten Up Camellia” eye care programs, which will upgrade classroom lighting with eye-protective fixtures in schools across Kashgar’s Zepu area (Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region) and Zhaotong’s Daguan area (Yunnan Province).
Additionally, the “Filial Piety and Respect for the Elderly” initiative — marking the second edition of the annual “Health Education in Communities” campaign — was launched.
By the end of this year, the project will host 10 health lectures in Minhang’s Hongqiao and Zhuanqiao towns, where community doctors will share practical health knowledge with 500 seniors, bringing accessible healthcare guidance closer to local elderly residents.
Over the past few years, Minhang has rolled out charity projects tailored to its unique needs and scenarios; annual funds raised for local philanthropy exceeded 100 million yuan in both 2020 and 2022.
The district has also extended care to children in China’s frontier regions, implementing 27 dedicated assistance projects in Xizang, Xinjiang and Yunnan with a total investment of 27 million yuan. These initiatives include disease screenings for schoolchildren and surgical support for sick children.
