Doctors in schools help student health
Along with reading, writing and arithmetic, schools are equally concerned about the physical and mental health of students. Solution? Put doctors in schools.
So far, 383 kindergartens, primary schools and middle schools in Minhang District have joined an in-house doctor project.
Check-ups in schools are nothing new, providing parents with a “report card” on their children’s health.
The in-school medical program expands health surveillance to more frequent contact with students, according to Yang Xuefang and Hu Jie, two doctors from the Huacao Community Health Center who are working in Huacao School in Minhang.
They have regular meetings with Zhang Ran, the school’s health teacher, twice a week.
“Students are monitored for some of the more common health problems facing young people, including under-nourishment, anemia, obesity, short-sightedness and heart problems,” Zhang said.
When problems are discovered, the in-school doctors meet with parents to advise them on courses of treatment.
Close health monitoring
“The campus doctors have the ability to chat with students during break times and discuss with them good health habits,” Zhang said. “This kind of communication means that doctors can become friends of students, earning their trust and respect.”
Doctors show health-related films to students and provide training in health issues for teachers.
Students and their parents have the contact numbers for their campus doctors so they can reach them anytime there is a need.
A survey by the Minhang Health and Family Planning Commission found that parents are uniformly happy about the new program.
The project began in 2010. That first year, campus doctors made 25,171 visits to schools.
The district has set up electronic health profiles for more than 198,000 students, according to commission.
