Emergency teams ease deluge peril
The Minhang District recorded the highest rainfall levels earlier this month when Shanghai experienced its biggest deluge in 52 years.
Despite that, there were no injuries reported in the district.
District emergency services drew manpower from the police, fire service and water department, fanned out into the district. The rescue effort was praised for its promptness and efficiency.
The storm flooded 200 roads and 240 residential communities in Minhang. One house collapsed. Cars were abandoned in up to 20 centimeters of water, and Metro services were disrupted.
“When I saw the water getting deeper and deeper, I was worried that local sewers were choked with rubbish,” said Qi Yinlin, a resident in Minhang who works in Minhang Restaurant.
Qi was among the volunteers who waded into water-filled streets to manually clear sewer grates of blockages.
Temporary shelters were set up at the Minhang No.2 Middle School and in the Kunyang Residential Community. Professional medical staff were on hand in case treatment was needed.
