鈥楩lood lights鈥 installed in underpass
AN LED screen has been installed at the entrance of the Xinxi Road underpass to monitor water levels and advise drivers about possible flooding during heavy rainstorms, according to the Minhang District Water Bureau.
Officials said the screen can flash three notices: “open to traffic” (ÔÊÐíͨÐÐ), "be cautious" (½÷É÷ͨÐÐ) or "no entry" (½ûֹͨÐÐ).
The screen is controlled by a water-monitoring device in the underpass. Once water levels rise above 20 centimeters, the screen will advise that the underpass is closed.
The bureau said 20 centimeters of water could cause flooding in exhaust pipes.
This is the first such alert system in an underpass in Shanghai.
Before the onset of the rainy season at the end of May, when seasonal flooding most often occurs, similar monitoring systems will be installed at another 11 underpasses in Minhang, including those on Zhongchun, Humin and Xinzhu roads, according to the officials.
They said maintenance workers will carry out routine inspections of the monitoring equipment all summer to ensure that it remains accurate.
Cars breaking down in underpasses during heavy rainstorms cause serious problems. In August 2008, when a thunderstorm hit the city right before the morning rush hour, rainfall accumulation reached 100 millimeters in an hour. It left many cars trapped in underpasses and caused massive traffic problems in the city for most of the day.
