Growers invite grape picking
MINHANG can be an ideal destination in this scorching summer and eating fresh grapes from local vineyards is a great option.
In the bright sunshine of July, clusters of berries are hanging from the vines and the grapes are in season. At Minhang Qiaojia Vineyard in Pujiang Town, the fresh ripening grapes are waiting for people to pick. As some newly introduced varieties, such as Zuijinxiang and Hongfushi, have been recently harvested, they have attracted many residents looking for a taste.
Having an intrinsic relation with Jiading Malu grapes, the planting of Qiaojia grapes originates from that of Malu grapes.
However, to ensure purity, quality and taste for the most part, Qiaojia grapes have adopted distinctive planting techniques developed by the Shanghai Grape Research Institute.
Covering an area of 24.7 hectares, every standard grape green house must first pass the pollution-free certification process.
To guarantee the quality of every crop, agronomists implement scientific management during the whole growth period.
The production of Qiaojia grapes is controlled within 30,000 catties per hectare, while the average is 75,000-90,000 catties per hectare. Therefore, the price of Qiaojia grapes is higher than other varieties. So far Qiaojia is one of the five orchards in Shanghai whose grapes have been nominated for World Expo 2010 designated fruits.
This year the grapes are expected to come to the market earlier than before thanks to special new cultivation methods in the energy-saving sunlight greenhouses.
Therefore the first batch of early-ripe grapes, including Yingya, August and Yatomi Rosa grapes, can be picked this weekend, so put grape picking on your schedule.
