HandsOn reaches out to migrants, elderly

HandsOn Shanghai, a non-profit organization, opened a volunteer center in Minhang's Xinzhuang area recently to offer help in an array of programs that include teaching migrant children English, visiting the elderly and cleaning up the environment.

The organization, founded in 2004 by a group of young foreign professionals, is searching for volunteers who are willing to contribute their time to helping people and the community.

Volunteers with skills in language, photography, science, music and reading are being sought. There will also be a "Big Brother" program providing mentors to migrant children.

"Anyone who has a passion for children's welfare and senior care and has the time and love to donate is encouraged to join us," said Xia Jie, event manager of the organization.

The only requirement is that people are able to devote at least part of one day a week to the program. "If they have good communications skills, are patient and easy-going, that's so much better," Xia said.

The Yumiao Primary School on Yindu Road, a school for migrant children, and the Xinzhuang Town Elderly Care Center are some of the venues in Minhang where voluntary activities are under way.

A month long summer camp targeting migrant children will also be held, offering classes in English, science and reading as well as fun activities like dancing, painting, drama, handicrafts and tai chi.

The Xinzhuang Town Elderly Care Center accommodates 260 senior residents with an average age of 85. Though there are 88 support staff, many of the residents still suffer from loneliness, boredom and depression.

Visits by volunteers willing to sit and chat and drink tea with them brighten many a wizened fact.

At the Lubinghua Kindergarten for migrants, volunteers have helped build a new library.

A partnership between the Minhang District government, the Xinzhuang Town, the Communist Party Youth League, and HandsOn Shanghai has been forged. The new volunteer center also will serve as a base for volunteer training.
