Home of the future harvests energy from the sun

THE Urban Best Practices Area west of the Huangpu River features 15 separate buildings and 40 exhibition halls.

It occupies about 110,000 square meters and the buildings all incorporate examples of new urban concepts and technologies, including the Microsoft "Future School" of Philadelphia and the revived old town of Cairo.

Representing Shanghai is a modern and environmentally friendly building which comes from Minhang District.

The "Shanghai Ecological Home" is located in the north of the area, occupying about 3,000 square meters.

It was originally an ecological experimental building on Shenfu Road, one of the achievements of the "Shanghai model ecological construction project," which used various measures to reduce the energy consumption of buildings.

This particular building is the first zero energy consumption construction in China. It is a residential house which uses solar energy effectively. The solar energy equipment on the roof is able to provide the entire building with adequate energy.

As well, the Shanghai Ecological Home also takes advantages of many other modern technologies such as natural illumination and LED lighting, effective recycling of rain and waste water, intelligent management and use of terrestrial heat.

With the display of such modern technologies for energy saving and environmental protection, the Shanghai Ecological Home will show the concept of sustainable ecological residential housing and the best way to apply it in people's daily life.
