Honoring those who touch hearts
THE organizers of the 7th "Touching Minhang" awards said they have received more than 140,000 votes, and 15 people out of 28 candidates will be honored in April.
The biennial awards honor humanitarian work in the community. The candidates include an engineer, a lawyer, retirees, a golf coach, a teacher, a policeman, a bus driver, a doctor, a cleaner and community workers.
Most of the votes came online and the rest were submitted by mail, said Fan Rong, a chief organizer of the event.
He said the votes are being tallied and the final results will be announced in April.
The nominees came from a field of more than 60 people recommended by work units or local communities for their contributions and warm hearts.
For example, there is Liu Hongchang, 76, who has taken care of 89-year-old Sheng Dingxian for 15 years.
He met Sheng, who lost her husband and her daughter and suffers from cataracts, during a community activity. Liu has been cited for treating her as his sister.
Then there is Yang Yiqiao, who has donated 35,400 milliliters of blood since 2004 and has participated in various volunteer service activities.
Another candidate is Yin Mugang, who has donated more than 50,000 yuan (US$8,065) for programs assisting students in poor areas during the past 18 years.
Yin visited recipient children in rural western China 17 times and helped build a root cellar at a primary school in remote Qinghai Province to store vegetables in winter.
Two groups are also included as finalists. One comprises nearly 1,000 female mediators who do grassroots work in Minhang.
The other is a team of seven volunteers in the Pujiang area who cut hair for senior citizens, repair electrical appliance in residents' home and helped decorate the local senior center.
