Housing problem continues but new solution planned
THE first round application period for affordable houses has finished and most families didn't get through it successfully.
So the housing problem in Minhang has been a hot topic again during the annual session of the District People's Congress and People's Political Consultative Conference. As a result of the session, a new policy may be issued this year for public rental houses.
"Now we're thinking of a new idea -- during the relocation project for Hongqiao Transportation Hub, each family involved in the project could get 2-3 apartments as compensation," said Chen Jing, director of Minhang District.
"While most of them will only take one for themselves, there will be at least one apartment spare. Of course the family will consider renting it out.
"Our idea is to provide such house resources and help families rent them. The government will offer policy support."
Chen believes it's a win-win-win outcome. "For government, we save the cost. We only need to plan a budget for house decoration and facilities. For the families, they get the house decorated for free, and they'll have a stable rental income. For the renters, the facilities and neighborhood management will be better and more organized."
The concept is still under discussion but judging from the conference, it seems widely supported.
"We're still working on it, hoping to carry it out within this year," said Chen. "The key is always to listen to our citizens. We can never decide any policy just by government's own ideas."
