Keeping fitness and the cost contained
A large orange shipping container filled with fitness equipment has moved into the Minhang District. It is called the Park Box.
In its fewer than 30 square meters, the container holds equipment like boxing trainers, aero bikes, treadmills and yoga balls. It also includes a changing room and individual lockers.
To use the facilities, people need to make an appointment on WeChat. In return, they receive a four-digit password to enter the container.
Park Box charges 10 yuan (US$1.5) an hour, which is considerably cheaper for many than gym memberships — especially memberships that largely go unused.
“It’s a great effort sometimes to go to a gym,” said a Park Box customer surnamed Li. “But I don’t need to think a lot about coming down here. I can just make an appointment whenever I feel like a workout, and I won’t feel guilty that I am wasting money on a gym membership if I don’t go.”
The container is equipped with an air purification system that filters out harmful PM2.5 particles. There are USB chargers and tele-courses as well.
Park Box has signed contracts with several housing estates in the last two months. Some 30 containers now serve nearly 2,000 communities in Shanghai. Another two containers in Minhang are expected to open soon.
