Library now lets blind people read

THE visually impaired now can "listen" to books by putting on earphones in the digital reading room of the Minhang Library, a new service launched by the library last month.

More than 100 CDs of books read by professional actors are on offer for the visually impaired including Chinese classics, Shakespeare plays, local operas and novels.

The readers are helped by staff workers who take them to the digital room, help them with earphones and put on the books the reader selects.

"It was the first time I listened to a book and it was very interesting," said Shan Yinfeng with a sight disability living in neighboring Lumei Park residential community.

"I'm blind, but I'm happy to learn something new. The service enriches my life and also helps me 'see' more of the outside world."

A braille reading area for blind people will be set up in the new library in the South Square at the Xinzhuang Metro Station, which is scheduled to be open this year.

The area will have computers designed for blind people and computer tutorials will be given for the visually impaired.

Handicapped people can borrow books using the telephone, and library staff will deliver the books to their homes.
