Lucky boy finds caring grannie
AN unfortunate boy called Xiao Hao has lived in the neighborhood of 388 Wuzhong Road in Hongqiao Town since he lost his father in childhood.
However, he is also a lucky boy because he still has his "grandma" and "sister" -- a group leader of the residents' committee Wang Wenjuan and her granddaughter Yang Xinyi.
In 2003, when the neighborhood of 388 Wuzhong Road was setting up a residents' committee, retired Wang became a group leader. One day, she heard talk between a woman and security guard.
"My boy always asks why all the others have their fathers but he doesn't," said the woman. "I don't know how to tell him."
Later, Wang learned the woman named A Hui was a single mother who came to Shanghai for work with her husband in the early 1990s.
Unfortunately, her husband died in a traffic accident after Xiao Hao was born and A Hui struggled to find a job because of her poor education background.
Days later, Wang visited A Hui's home. "I hoped I could do something for them," said Wang.
When she connected with this special family, Xiao Hao had just entered primary school. Since his mother could not help, Wang became the household teacher, spending a couple of hours helping Xiao Hao study as well as teaching him a lot about life. A year later, Xiao Hao has made great progress in study.
As the days go by, Xiao Hao and Wang get closer and closer. He calls her "grandma."
Wang's granddaughter Yang happens to be a schoolmate of Xiao Hao so she takes care of him in school, just like a sister. She tells her grandma if Xiao Hao has problems.
Last year, when Xiao Hao entered Shanghong Middle School, Wang visited the school leaders, telling them about him and asking for special care. The school leaders were all moved by this "grandma" and promised that his school fees would be waived.
"I've been his grandma for six years," said Wang. "And I'm happy to see a good future for him."
