Medal-winning inventions put to practical applications
INVENTORS in Minhang District won 10 gold, 12 silver and 16 bronze medals at the seventh International Invention Exhibition in Kunshan recently.
Garage system
Research staff of Shanghai Edinburgh Elevator designed a new garage system for providing parking without disrupting the landscape. It involves an array of lifting equipment.
The system has been adopted by the Minhang Court, Minhang Commerce Bureau, Huangpu District Police Office, Jiajie International Square, Maolian Building and MCC Baosteel, where parking space has been at a premium.
"It's safe, economical and environmentally friendly," said one garage user.
"It creates little noise and provides high space utilization."
The only problem with the system is its high cost of construction, but that may be brought down as the system gets wider application.
Road sweeper
Another winning invention, developed by Shanghai Shenzhou Automobile Design Co., prevents road sweepers from crashing into obstructions.
Traditional road sweepers consisted of suction inlets in the front and sides. Those on the sides often get damaged when they bump into stones or barriers.
The winning device uses a red sensor to warn the vehicle of an obstacle and move it away. With that problem removed, the driver of a street sweeper can move at higher speeds, and maintenance costs of damaged vehicles are reduced.
Among the other winning inventions were devices related to GPS positioning shoes, rapid anaerobic relief sprays and carbon filtering.
Payment machine
A third invention winner is a self-service payment machine developed by Sun Junlei, a director at the Xinzhuang Health Service Center.
The device, which is easy to operate and can identify coins and notes, was put into use in 2010.
Since then, it has never broken down. It can even identify counterfeit money.
Sun's invention has been incorporated in community health centers in Jiangchuan, Zhuanqiao, Maqiao and Huacao towns.
