Metro line opens, completing link
The western section of Metro Line 12 began operation on Saturday, one of three new line extensions in Shanghai. Metro Line 12 now runs 21 kilometers from Qixin Road in Minhang to Jinhai Road in the Pudong New Area.
The western segment goes from Qixin Road to Qufu Road in what was formerly the Zhabei District. Five stations on the segment are in Minhang, said the Shentong Metro Co Ltd.
Apart from Minhang, the line traverses the districts of Xuhui, Huangpu and Jing鈥檃n, including what was formerly Zhabei. The Qixin Road station will connect to Metro Line 20 and the Gudai Road station will link to Metro Line 21 when both those lines are built. They are currently in the planning stage.
All the new stations in Minhang are expected to experience extremely busy rush hours.
As the starting point on the line, the Qixin Road station is adjacent to the Xinzhuang Business Zone, which is now under construction and will go into operation soon.
The Gudai Road station is next to the Children鈥檚 Hospital of Fudan University, one of the busiest areas in the district. Easier access is expected to increase the patient load on the hospital.
Three of the new stations 鈥 Donglan Road, Hongxin Road and Hongmei Road 鈥 sit adjacent to large residential areas. They are expected to handle big crowds between 7-9am on weekdays.
鈥淲e are expecting very crowded stations in the morning,鈥 said Zhang Wenyi, a resident on Hongmei Road. 鈥淏ut the new line is very convenient for us. Before it opened, the nearest stations to us were Hongqiao Road and Yishan Road. Now we have more options and easier access.鈥
The new segment provides transfer points to nine other Metro lines in Shanghai. Passengers can transfer to other lines directly from the transit halls at Hanzhong Road, Damuqiao Road, Longhua Road M. and Jiashan Road stations.
They will have to walk through passageways to the stations of other lines at Shaanxi Road S., Longcao Road and Caobao Road stations.
The decor of the new stations will also be a highlight. To improve the air quality inside the stations, electrostatic dust collection equipment was added to the ventilation system.
At Gudai Road station, in deference to young patients of the nearby children鈥檚 hospital, the d茅cor features colorful, lively elements, including depictions from the stories 鈥淕irl in the Flowers鈥 and 鈥淗ouse on the Rainbow.鈥
At the other four new stations in the district, birds, flowers and seasonal features are the main themes. Designers tried to provide a restful environment for anxious commuters waiting for trains.
