Minpu bridge almost set for traffic
THE last part of Minpu Bridge's main structure was installed last week to connect the two sections from each side of the Huangpu River.
The 3,610-meter bridge, the first two-deck bridge in Shanghai, will partially open to traffic in September and fully open before the 2010 World Expo starts in May. It will slash travel times from downtown to the suburbs, Pudong International Airport and neighboring Zhejiang Province.
Its upper level, merging with the A15 Expressway, will carry eight lanes with a speed limit of 120 kilometers per hour, while traffic on the four-lane lower level will be restricted to 60 kilometers per hour, according to its builder, Shanghai Foundation Engineering Co Ltd.
The bridge is the first double-deck highway cable-stayed bridge in the city, with a main span of 708 meters. It will become the world's longest bridge of its type.
