New media project in science zone
THE Zizhu Science Zone has started construction on the new China (Shanghai) Internet Audio-Visual Industrial Park, and some big domestic online service suppliers, such as www.tudou.com, PPS and PPLive, have signed up to locate facilities there.
The "new media" project was approved by State Administration of Radio Film and Television in February.
It will be a joint venture between the administration and the science zone.
The industrial park will be located on 14.6 hectares bordered by Zixing, Ziri and Jiangchuan roads.
It will involve an initial investment of about 2 billion yuan (US$294 million).
The park has been designated as a development project for Minhang in the next five years.
Zizhu has said it hopes to establish an integrated chain of Internet-related "new media" industries inside the zone.
Initial projections estimate the value of industries there will climb to more than 10 billion yuan and tax revenue from the park could be as high as 1 billion yuan.
The park is intended to make Shanghai an international leader in the field.
China has more than 400 million net users.
About 200 million netizens are connected to the Internet by cell phone.
Future prospects are breathtaking, according to local officials overseeing the project.
The park will be supported by multinational information technology companies already in Zizhu, including Intel and Microsoft, and by two esteemed universities, Jiao Tong and East China Normal.
