New shops open with no cashiers
Three 24-hour cashier-less convenience shops opened in Minhang recently.
To enter, registered customers scan a QR code at the door and pay with their mobile phones. All merchandise is digitally tagged and anything purchased is scanned for price.
The new convenience store on Lanping Road is only 10 square meters, but it contains a wide range of products, including wine, beer, snack, yoghurt and fresh fruit. The prices are slightly lower than in mainstream convenience shops that have to pay staff salaries.
The store accepts payment only on WeChat and Alipay. An alarm goes off if a customer tries to leave without paying. If a customer scans the wrong item, there’s a button for operator service.
The other two stores are located on Humin and Dongchuan roads.
